Blog Post #4- The Transformation of Radio to Podcasts
There has been an increase in studies regarding an average person’s attention span in relation to the ongoing evolution of technology. It has been noted that due to social media platforms like TikTok, it has shortened one's ability to stay focussed for longer than a couple minutes. That being said, this directly related to the downfall of radio, and the introduction of podcast popularity. Podcasts allow people to stay engaged just as they would a face-to-face conversation. Rather than listening to the same popular songs being replayed among radio stations, being able to listen to someone talk about a topic one may be passionate about allows for more engagement and the ability to keep one’s attention.
Hi There,
ReplyDeleteThis was a very well done discussion post that highlights a great amount of points concerned with how social media has impacted our society today. I do agree that TikTok has drastically decreased one's ability to remain focused for prolonged periods of time. We are so used to receiving something new and having constant stimulation that when attempting to focus it seems almost impossible.
I do agree that podcasts defiantly are more engaging to interact with as we are internalizing and understanding the information we are being told especially when it is important to us. For me personally, I really like listening to women's health and wellness podcasts. When I have an opportunity to learn something new I often am more engaged because I want to understand the information I am being told.
Overall, very well done discussion post for this week. I look forward to hearing from you in the future.

Hi,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your discussion post. I also believe that social media platforms such as TikTok contributed to shortened attention span, as users became used to video that do not last longer than 3 minutes. Indeed, podcasts fits today's norms more so than radio station as it is already a struggle for people to focus on the content they are consuming for more than a few minutes, therefore, they might as well select the specific content they are engaging with.
hello,
ReplyDeleteI agree that Tiktok can affect someone's attention span. I also think that because it is so easy to skip videos and look up what you want to watch that it makes people very selective on what they give their attention too. This could help in explaining why podcasts are starting to take over for radio. There are so many different podcasts about every different genre that people can select exactly who and what they want to hear. This makes it easier then radio services because you can only get certain channels in certain areas and you don't haver as much control over what you hear, other then the genre. In a technological world control is essential for success and I believe that the power of podcasting can one day over take radio. The idea of attention span relates directly to having control over what you hear in my opinion.
Hello,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your post this week. I do agree with you that social media apps like TikTok have had an effect on one's ability to focus on things for long periods of time. On a personal level I have noticed that will start to have a lack of interest in longer videos compared to shorter ones alike TikTok or Snapchat videos. I also think that another medium to blame for this is stream services for Television shows (i.e., Netflix, Disney).
I also agree that podcasts have the ability to be more engaging with their audience compared to radio stations. However, I do wonder that if we ( our age group) have that idea because of the majority of talk radio stations are hosted by an older audience that might not cover the content we are interested in.
