Viral TikToker's & Creating Music - Jessica Kopecny
One thing I have found interesting recently is how most viral tiktokers have been coming out with songs, even though their content and what seemed to be their main area of interest revolved around something entirely different. I have added the links to the music videos of Charli D'amelio and Dixie D’amelio. In my personal opinion, it was surprising when Dixie came out with a song. Due to the fact that I have never seen a video of her singing on her platform or any other insight to a passion for music, until she posted something about a song that she was releasing. This made me wonder if she was actually passionate about music, or if she just took advantage of her following and the resources available to her. After about a year of her performing and coming out with music, it seems as if this is the direction she wants to go and is truly passionate about it. On the other hand, her sister Charli who is known strictly for dancing, as she was just on Dancing With The Stars, has recently come out with a song. Her song immediately went viral, currently having 4.3 million views within 2 months.
I am interested in others' opinions on whether they believe the song went viral due to Charli’s following, or because of the genuine talent and quality of the song?

My reason for taking this course is my interest in the different forms of digital media and how they are constantly evolving and changing. This course interested me as it mentioned the discussion of podcasts, which is something that has interested me as it seems to have become a popular platform within the past few years. Almost every social media influencer I have followed has started a podcast, even if what made them became viral had nothing to do with them talking or “audio” in general. I am intrigued to learn more about the reasoning behind this shift to podcasts, and digital media in general.
Great post! I also thought about TikTok and the influence it has in the music industry. I agree that it seems like once a creator goes viral, like Charli and Dixe, they feel the need to attach a "real job" or passion to their platform. I personally believe that both girls have different passions than singing, I'm pretty sure that Chali is known for dancing. In addition to this illusion of having a real talent in singing I believe that creators also recognize the potential to go viral on the platform and make a ton of money. I'm pretty sure that almost every kid who was part of the Hype House or other TikTok groups has some kind of song - Addison Rae, Huddy, Nessa Bartlett, Charli, Dixe etc.To me it seems really transparent and fake.
ReplyDeleteI too find it interesting that content creators are becoming popular in the music industry despite the fact they became "famous" for completely different reasons. My opinion on the question you have posed is that Charlis song only went viral because of her popularity before music. This is because, across all music streaming platforms there are dozens of more talented artists that create music but get no recognition. They are not getting this recognition because there are so many people releasing music. This made it very easy for Charli because she already had over 100 million followers at the time she released her first song. I believe this relates to my post about viral creators and podcasts. Viral content creators are looking to out source into as many forms of income as they can, because their fans will support them so matter what.
