Viral TikTok Artists - Megan Yamamoto


Something that I find interesting that relates to the world of digital media and sound is TikTok and its “For you page” (FYP). TikTok has become a platform where individual artists can share their music without having to already have subscribers like YouTube. The for you page specifically has allowed many small artists to blow up and gain a following online. Especially throughout the pandemic, many artists blew up because they went viral on the app. As a user of TikTok, I’ve discovered many artists by scrolling through the for you page and finding songs or artists that I enjoy listening to. One artist that I’ve recently discovered is a country artist named Josh Ross whose video was duetted by another country artist named Bailey Zimmerman. I find it interesting how one video going viral on the app can really accelerate an artist's career.

I took this course because I’m interested in the various aspects of digital media and how these aspects affect how we communicate with one another. Audio is a part of most social media posts today and I think it would be interesting to learn how it has changed how we interpret and understand digital media.

    Hey! I really enjoyed reading your post as I also find Tik Tok to be a great platform for finding new music. I find it interesting how so many songs that are on the top charts and playing on the radio were first discovered on Tik Tik by going viral. I think that if it were not for Tik Tok many artists would not be in the same position of fame that they are today as it would be alot harder for them to get discovered.

    Hey Megan! I agree that TikTok has become a very good platform for discovering new music and artists. Due to the algorithm the "for you page" uses, I find that finding new music is almost effortless and has helped many artists grow their audiences. Great Post!

In addition to the presentations and class discussions from this week I wanted to talk more about technological determinism versus social constructionism because it was a topic that I found both interesting and a bit confusing. I would like to use this discussion to compare and contrast the two in order to better understand the two terms and what they mean in relation to podcast studies. I found the platformization of podcasting to be a very interesting topic discussed. Prior to the platformization of podcasting, as discussed by John Sullivan in “The Platforms of Podcasting: Past and Present”, a method known as RSS was used to consume podcasts. This was not easy for everyone to use, as only people with higher knowledge of the use of technology would be able to use this method. Steve Jobs would be the first to make a platform for podcasting with the release of iTUnes 4.9. THis allowed users the ability to consume and discover podcasts from the same place, ultimately making it much easier for the general population to enjoy this medium.
