Anthony Sigismondo: TikTok & Trending Sounds
Something that I find very interesting in the world of digital media and sound/music is the phenomenon that is “trending TikTok sounds”. As many already know, TikTok allows users to upload their own sounds, but more importantly, users can essentially use any other sound on the platform. Interestingly, a lot of artists and their music has become successful thanks to its popularization on TikTok’s trending-sounds page. In a lot of cases, it seems as if a musician might only focus on creating one section of a song so that it becomes viral on TikTok, neglecting the rest of the song creation process.
One of the most prominent reasons that I took this course is because of its exploration of the world of sound. Most of my work in Comm studies has been focused on visual/nonverbal communication, so this area of study is both a needed and wanted change for me.
A topic I’d like to explore regarding digital media and new aural cultures in my group project would be something in the topic/area of popular sounds and social media
Hi Anthony, I too find the use of sounds on TikTok to be interesting. There are many artists today that grew a fanbase through TikTok and the use of trending sounds. I have also seen many older songs resurface and become popular again through TikTok. It has become a platform where many artists begin to grow popularity. This is because of the "for you page" and the ability for artists videos to reach beyond just their following. Tiktok has definitely become a popular outlet for growing artists to share their music in hopes of growing their fanbase
