Spotify Playlist

One aspect of digital media and music I find interesting is my playlist via Spotify (link below). I grew up listening to all different kinds of music and since have fallen in love with genres ranging from classical (Mozart) to old school hip hop (Outkast). The playlist that I have shared is typically played while I am in the car with friends and family (as the title states). The songs consist of throwbacks and music I know will get people to sing along. I tend to do a lot of driving during the summer so having a good playlist for people to sing along is a must for me.  I prefer to have a pre-approved playlist compared to a Spotify made playlist for two main reasons. Firstly, this playlist is exclusively listened to in a car and  it would be dangerous if I am changing the songs while driving. Secondly as said above I like creating a fun environment that allows people to sing along and relax while driving to our destination.

One thing I am quite interested in learning more about this semester is how different platforms have affected the music industry. Specifically looking at how music/songs gain popularity over apps like TikTok and Instagram. Over the summer I wrote a paper about how the internet has changed the music industry, I look forward to furthering my knowledge about this subject.

Let me know what you think about the playlist and if you have any suggests for songs to add. I look forward to collaborating with you all this semester.

  1. As a music fanatic, I can relate to your desire regarding choosing a pre-approved playlist to listen to while driving in the car, especially with friends and family members. The first reasoning you provided surrounding avoiding distracted driving is commonsensical while your second explanation is agreeable and eye-opening; your desire to play music that firstly satisfies your friend's and family's taste while you drive describes how our music tastes alter based on the environment that we are in. This is something that I commonly experience as the designated friend on aux, creating differing playlists to play for differing demographics of my friends and family. While I enjoy all of the music, listening to a pre-approved 70s and 80s playlist with my cottage friends would not be the same as with my family that I grew up listening to it with.

Do you agree that your enjoyment level of listening to specific playlists changes based on whose around?

    1. Hi Sara,
Thank you for your response. While your comment about the pre-approved playlist being chosen to avoid distracted driving is common sense. Sadly, I do not think that this is true, I know many of my peers who think that picking music or things like that is not distracted driving compared to being on your phone for communication purposes (sorry for getting off topic a little).

To answer your question, I would agree that my enjoyment level of listening to specific playlist changes based on the people I am with. For instance, I am a fan of Country music (new and old) and as a result I have a country music playlist. My parents on the other hand do not like new country, unlike my friends. I will not play my country playlist around my parents as they will verbal express their dislike the type of music and ask multiple times to change the playlist. Their actions are quite different than my friends who would sing loudly to each song played. Knowing this, I refrain from listening to my country playlist around my parents as I don’t enjoy my experiences compared to when I listen with my friends.

  2. Hi there,

I really enjoyed your discussion post this week. I found that it was heavily relatable to many individuals in our society. I initially was going to say that this was just confined to our generation but since the introduction of digital music back in the day, my parents even now have constructed playlists for a specific mood they are trying to convey. My dad specifically, is a very big individual on music. He has his different playlists for a Friday night gathering or a Saturday/ Sunday morning breakfast with the family. I as well have my constructed playlists ready to go like you suggested in your discussion post.

In addition to your other point, I really would like to discuss how the music industry is affected by social media and the need for artists to go viral on different social media apps. I know another discussion post by Grace touched on the topic of Halsey, so give that a read! Overall, it would be great to do a even deeper dive into it during the course of the semester to get a better understanding.

Great discussion post, I look forward to hearing from you in the coming weeks.

    2. Hey Caraline,

Thank you for sharing a personal experience about your dad and his use of digital music. I think it is wonderful how music is able to play key roles in activities that we take part in. As a kid, my dad created a playlist my hockey team’s locker room. I remember a couple of times the speakers not working and feeling the large void without the music. Have you had this feel as well on your morning breakfast with your family?

It is pretty interesting to see how social media can have such an impact on the music industry. Similar to Halsey, I do believe that John Legend also spoke out about his experience with social media and the music industry specifically Tik Tok.

Thank you for your response and I look forward to this semester.
