The Growth of Music Through The TikTok Platform- Jessica Hardie

Digital media and especially music is a big part of my everyday life, so I am looking forward to learning more about it. Something I find interesting and compelling from the world of digital media and sound/music is the song "How Do I Say Goodbye" by Dean Lewis a singer/songwriter that I discovered on TikTok. Dean Lewis originally wrote this song for his dad after finding out that he had an aggressive form of cancer. The video which is linked was the first TikTok I actually ever saw of the song, but it is now all over TikTok and other platforms. Dean Lewis has released popular songs in the past, but this is the first time he used TikTok as the main way of promoting a song and the attention it gained was amazing. The song is now the most popular of the songs he has written and released and has been a trending sound on TikTok for some time now. Since making a TikTok account dean Lewis has used the platform to share personal videos and experiences with making music and why he writes the songs he does. I believe this has made his music much more personal and given his songs more meaning, growing his popularity. Since his debut on TikTok Dean Lewis has grown as an artist and has become well-known around the world. 

I took this course because I love music and have always been interested in the technologies used for sound production and how they work and have become a large part of our culture. My Uncle is the owner of multiple radio stations across Canada, so I have been around music and music production since I was little and I hope to learn more about it and how digital media and aural cultures are now shifting through this course. A topic that I would be interested in exploring for my group project would have to be sound and the power it holds. I think it would be interesting to research how different sounds or noises carry power in different ways and how power can be expressed through noise. Much like the Dean Lewis song I discussed above which holds a lot of power in TikTok as people are able to resonate with what the song is about.

    Hi Jessica, I have also seen Dean Lewis' video about the backstory to his song "How Do I Say Goodbye" on TikTok. TikTok is a great platform for artists to share deeper meanings to their songs and share a story along with their music. I've seen a bunch of videos that he's posted where he even brought his Dad on stage with him to perform the song. It's interesting that since his TikTok video went viral that this song has surpassed his previous more popular songs. Overall, great post!

In addition to the presentations and class discussions from this week I wanted to talk more about technological determinism versus social constructionism because it was a topic that I found both interesting and a bit confusing. I would like to use this discussion to compare and contrast the two in order to better understand the two terms and what they mean in relation to podcast studies. I found the platformization of podcasting to be a very interesting topic discussed. Prior to the platformization of podcasting, as discussed by John Sullivan in “The Platforms of Podcasting: Past and Present”, a method known as RSS was used to consume podcasts. This was not easy for everyone to use, as only people with higher knowledge of the use of technology would be able to use this method. Steve Jobs would be the first to make a platform for podcasting with the release of iTUnes 4.9. THis allowed users the ability to consume and discover podcasts from the same place, ultimately making it much easier for the general population to enjoy this medium.
