How TikTok Encourages Interaction

An aspect of digital media I find rather interesting is the way in which it allows for communication with individuals we would otherwise have a much less chance of interacting with, as well as how it encourages subcultures. TikTok in specific does an excellent job of uniting users from different countries and allowing them to interact and even form online friendships. This often occurs through the use of algorithms, where platform users are grouped together due to similar interests.

There is an incredible amount of content regarding digital media and how it functions in our day-to-day lives. I find the study of digital media and aural cultures extremely interesting and I am looking forward to expanding my knowledge surrounding the subject.

  1. I agree that digital media has created opportunities for individuals to form connections with others globally. Insofar as in the absence of digitization, these relationships would not be feasible. In this way, technology and especially digital media has shrunken the world and in combination with language translating software, enabled the intermingling of different cultures thereby aiding in the globalization of society.

As you mention, media platforms such as TikTok do a great job of helping with this through algorithms which cater your "For You Page" to match your specific interests. The sense of constant relatability and enjoyment to content for avid TikTok users I argue gives the platform a competitive edge over other media applications contemporarily.

  2. Interesting take on TikTok. Although I enjoy the platform immensely and spend for more time on it than I probably should, I have not found that it fosters connections with others in terms of interactive sociality. The FYP algorithm functions as a curator of very short video spectacles and diatribes, rather than as a medium of dialogue ad social interactivity.

  3. Hi, Great Post!!
Ever since getting TikTok I have always found the algorithm quite interesting as I find it very different from other social media platforms, specifically the FYP. The first thing that came to mind when reading your post is the few times I saw someone post a video about finding a person they once met but had no way of reaching out to them, as they forgot their name or contact info. This video went viral and reached so many people that the person was able to find and contact the person they were searching for. I feel as these types of scenarios and interactions are only possible due to the way TikTok and its algorithm allows for such wide range of interaction between its users.
