Discovering Music on Tik Tok - Alexandra Remmling

An aspect of digital media and sound/music that I have really been enjoying recently is Tik Tok music accounts. I find them entertaining and a great way to discover new music. Often the videos will be 30 sec to a min long featuring numerous songs which allow users to find new music extremely quickly. I often will watch Tik Tok videos that feature numerous songs in one video or I will watch ones that djs have created featuring mash up songs. The link below is just one video I liked the songs it featured; however, there are numerous other accounts I also watch.

I’m taking this course since I'm interested in learning more about digital media and aural cultures. In particular, I'm interested in learning more about streaming services such as Apple Music and Spotify and how their user algorithms work to recommend music.

    Hi Alexandra, I agree that TikTok has become a great place to discover new music and artists. TikTok has become a popular place for new artists because new music spreads so fast with the use of the for you page. I find that when I am in the mood for finding a new artist or new music the first place I go is TikTok because of how easy it is to find new music. With the use of TikToks algorithms I also find it knows exactly what music I enjoy and caters certain music to me making it much easier to find new music. Great post!

In addition to the presentations and class discussions from this week I wanted to talk more about technological determinism versus social constructionism because it was a topic that I found both interesting and a bit confusing. I would like to use this discussion to compare and contrast the two in order to better understand the two terms and what they mean in relation to podcast studies. I found the platformization of podcasting to be a very interesting topic discussed. Prior to the platformization of podcasting, as discussed by John Sullivan in “The Platforms of Podcasting: Past and Present”, a method known as RSS was used to consume podcasts. This was not easy for everyone to use, as only people with higher knowledge of the use of technology would be able to use this method. Steve Jobs would be the first to make a platform for podcasting with the release of iTUnes 4.9. THis allowed users the ability to consume and discover podcasts from the same place, ultimately making it much easier for the general population to enjoy this medium.
