Discord Acquires Social Media Application Gas

CNBC – Discord Is Paying for Teens to Give Each Other Compliments

This past week, Discord acquired the social media platform Gas, an application designed to encourage users, and primarily teenagers to compliment each other through technology. With its initial launch in August 2021, seven million in sales to date, and the number one ranking for most daily active users, Gas has become a widespread success. This can be attributed to the application’s focus on creating an uplifting and empowering environment for its users by means of positive affirmations and polls. While Gas was unfairly subjected to a sex trafficking hoax in October, their consumer base has continued to increase since then. This article caught my attention because of the company’s mission to have a positive impact on user's insecurities which is generally associated with their usage of other social media platforms. Additionally, with my previous knowledge on Discord’s safety issues and the commonality of accounts being disabled, I was surprised to read that the company is taking on another platform.

I am looking forward to digital media and aural cultures because of my passion for music and mass media research. I would be particularly interested in exploring the impacts of Spotify’s user layout and how that influences the way subscribers perceive and use their streaming-service application for the project, however I am also open to other ideas.

  1. Hi there! I enjoyed reading your blog. I found it super nice to hear that a media platform like Gas is working to create positive impressions on user experience. Compared to other media platforms that are riddled with hate, cancel culture, and more, this was really uplifting to read. Thanks for the news!
