Apple Music: Listen Now

Something from the world of digital media and sound that I find interesting is the “Listen Now” section of Apple music. More specifically, the playlists it creates for you, based on your music preferences. When I go onto my Apple Music app, the “Listen Now” section will create playlists for me such as the ‘New Music Mix’, ‘Chill Mix’, or ‘Favourites Mix’. Each one of these playlists is tailored to my music taste, but also shows me new music that I may be interested in. For example, the ‘New Music Mix’ will look at the music I regularly listen to, and create a playlist of new music Apple thinks I would enjoy. I really enjoy this aspect of Apple music because it helps me to discover new music that I may have never heard.

One of the main reasons I decided to take this course was because this was one of the few communications courses that covers this specific topic. Apart from the course, Image, Sounds, & Text, we as communications students have not had many opportunities to focus on aural cultures. One topic in particular that I am looking forward to learning about in regards to the final group project is the transition from radio to streaming platforms. I personally do not ever really listen to the radio, and only use Apple Music. That being said, my mom has listened to the radio for most of her life, and has just recently gotten her first Apple Music account. I think it would be really interesting to see what factors were crucial in the transition from radio to streaming platforms.

  1. Hi Cassie, I personally have Spotify instead of Apple Music but there is something similar to the "Listen Now" feature that you're talking about. I use Spotify's version of the "Listen Now" feature to also find new music that is similar to what I already listen to. There is also a weekly playlist curated by Spotify called "Discovered Weekly" where there are a bunch of songs recommended to users that the Spotify algorithm thinks they would like. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Hey Cassie, I also really enjoy the listen now section on Apple Music and often find myself listing to those curated playlists if i'm on the hunt for new music. I will also often add songs from these curated playlists to my own playlists to make it easier to remember which ones I like. Another aspect of Apple music that I like is the feature where it shows you music that your friends are listening to, I find this also a great way to find new music.

  3. Hi cassie, I too use the Listen now feature on apple music. I find that in most cases it does a pretty good job at gaging new music that I would enjoy. One down side that I have noticed is that they frequently put music that I listen too already in the playlists because I do not save and download all of my music. They also often recommend music from artists I already know well too much about. Overall, I do find it to be a useful feature because if I were to even find just a few songs I like that would be a success.
